Wow. Democrats almost don't sound like Republicans all the sudden. Kind of. This Daschle remark is something else:

“the Senate has officially acted, we acted last fall. I think to act again is redundant. But I also believe senators ought to have the opportunity to express themselves on the record if they wish to do so.”

What better way to "express themselves on the record" than to "act again"? What a mucky message, Tom.

I won't pretend to be surprised by this latest bit, but I hope we don't have to draft clowns, ballerinas or models to fight in our various wars, (because losing them would be horrible,) but I guess many Americans feel like soliders are disposable. Terry, shame on you. How can you complain so much about Bushy if you didn't vote against him? Shame shame. Here are some useful links to info about 2004 candidates: Politics1.com has a fairly well-maintained list, with headshots. USelections.com has a more extensive list, with some independents, and direct links to candidates' sites (many of the indies can't seem to afford domain names). This LA Times piece has a decent selection of related articles and links. Me, I'd lean towards this John Edwards dude if he'd show a little more edge. He's not a real Washington insider, he's from a working class background, he didn't attend Ivy League schools, and he has a nice haircut. Er, nicer than Traficant's, anyway.

I have never voted before! I have always believed that my single vote really doesn't matter, and maybe it doesn't, but we cannot afford not to vote anymore. We cannot afford to allow this wretched morally corrupt government from continuing to steal our civil liberties and freedoms while we sit back and let it happen. Our voices are our weapons against oppression. We have to use them to maintain our freedom to be a part of America's choices, rather than letting corporations and special interest parties make the choices. Every bitches about Clinton being a bad president, but things were never better in this country. He did a good job and maintained peace and economic strength. He was a much better president than any one of his naysayers could ever be. He had problems, but he was intelligent and cared about people and the enviornment. We cannot say the same thing for our current president. Vote, vote, vote. It doesn't matter if you vote democratic or republican, or for a chimpanzee, just vote for the best person for the job because it matters. Here's the web address where you can get registering info... One of the coolest things about the web for awhile was that it was a boundary-less international realm of free communication. Especially poignant, since it was originally "Arpanet" Guess it was inevitable that one day it would be a new battleground. As GWB would have it, it's "do as I say, not do as I do..."

This country sure spends a lot of time figuring out how we'll use weapons we'll never use.

In case you've all forgotten, WE'RE AT WAR. Our enemy is invisible, and can only be recognised by our Homeland Security Department. His face and his name are subject to change at any time, much like K-Mart prices. In fact, he may not even exist, which makes him even MORE terrifying. So, in light of the Homeland Security Advisory System being bumped up to "Orange" (see chart) we thought it was time for a quick reminder on HOW TO LIVE IN FEAR:

ORANGE: High risk of terrorist attacks.

  • Coordinate necessary security efforts with armed forces or law enforcement agencies.
  • Take additional precaution at public events.
  • Prepare to work at an alternate site or with a dispersed work force.
  • Restrict access to essential personnel only.
  • Tuck your head between your knees and kiss your ass goodbye.
  • Trust no-one, not even your mother or dog.

Terry, that rocks. It's a strange time when actors (George Clooney? Sean Penn? Ed Asner?) and comediennes are more prepared to discuss world events intelligently than newscasters are...I refer to comediennes, because the other day I watched Janeane Garofalo rake some talking head (don't remember whom) over the coals by pointing out how TV news these days utterly fails to put things in context or objectify information. Jack, the crusty old man, just called Germany and France stupid for not supprting Bush and his war. Terry writes a letter `cuz he don't like that. (By the way Ian, that article was great. I read the whole thing. "Martians and Body Snachers, indeed!) Here's the letter... "Jack, I have always found you amusing, but your comments about France and Germany not supporting "Bush's war" shows you are the one who is stupid, but then you are a part of a system that is so far from reporting unbiased news, it isn't funny anymore. Pathetic is more like it. The fact is, "Jack-ass" there is no evidence for an immediate launch on Iraq, and the fact that UN inspectors are even in there again, is evidence that Iraq also doesn't want a war. The fact that even one American supports George W. Bush, one of the most ignorant and dangerous Presidents in history, is sad, but the fact that you and the media so blindly support him, is atrocious. Bush's behavior will lead to further terrorists attacks on our country, and the loss of countless lives of innocent Americans and Iraqis. Your morning show has gone down the toilet since Anderson left and that babbling, opinionated idiot, Bill joined you. You round out a circle of clowns, Jack. I hope you and Paula don't consider yourselves journalists, because nothing could be further from the truth. Why don't you cover some individuals who oppose Bush and his "crusade?" That would be objective journalism, and that is something you all have forgotten about, but at least we all know where you stand on this topic even if that isn't your job. "Click," that's the sound of me turning off the television, and closing the doors on CNN for good. Terry Osterhout Patriot, and disgusted American NY

I am reading a riveting book called "Fortunate Son," and strangely it is kind of positive, but the Bush people didn't want the coke info out there. The Bush people threatened the media to withhold press passes to White House briefings if they gave the book coverage. The author's publisher dropped the book and when the author's wife and child were threatened and his credability was destroyed, he "took his own life." The book actually makes me like Bush a little more, (which isn't saying much, but it goes to show that you better watch what you say about this dum-dum, he's ruthless and not as dumb as we think. Eno is a genius. Ian, I was so glad to have read that. Thanks. Meanwhile Bill (the Penis,) O`Reilly is back on his attacks on George Clooney after Clooney made fun of Bush and Charleton Heston on the Charlie Rose Show. At Butthole Bill's web site there is a questionaire and e-mail for how the public feels about Clooney's remarks. Ironically, for as much as I loathe O`Reilly, this was the first time I had the displeasure of actually reading any of his columns. Did he get any education? Wheh, what a mess. Barely illiterate like our President. Here is what I wrote...Clooney's comments "un-American?" Give me a break. O`Reilly should find another target. Clooney did nothing wrong after Sep. 11th and O'Reilly slams celebrities because they hate his guts for his "work" with tabloid television show "Inside Edition." George Clooney is one of the smartest, most humble actors working. His comments about the Bush administration and it's stupid, unrelenting desire to be at war, are dead on and more and more of the country is agreeing with that sentiment. Sometimes Bill O`Reilly comes off like a really intelligent man with some sound opinions based in reality, but since Sep. 11th he has joined the ranks of just another clouded and biased pseudo-journalist. Go have tea with Ann Coulter, the adults are speaking!Hey, wait a minute, I'm almost illiterate myself. Damn it!

It's a crazy world. Liquor companies are launching secret campaigns to make people believe that alcohol prevents heart disease. Terrorists send secret messages in fortune cookies. Rollover-prone SUV's make people feel safe because they're big and when you're inside, the outside world doesn't exist, which is good, because outside are trench-coat-clad kids with Armalite Rifles and RPG's who think they're playing a video game, and you're the target.

But even crazier....this thread on Metafilter made me realize that CNN, Reuters, The New York Times, and virtually all mainstream news organisations in the U.S. gave scant attention to (and in fact understated numbers for) the peace marches over the weekend. C'mon....even if you accept the lower figures of 200,000-300,000, that's more citizens protesting in one day than the number of troups dispatched to the Persian Gulf Region (about 120,000 military personnel so far) in the past year. Who's telling whom to play this down like this? It's maddening.
